I love their music, but they are pissing me off so hard.
Like… no y’all did not just call some chick your chola.
ALSO. Ghetto girl, you drive me cray??? That one will never not piss me off. EVER. The amount of times they call girls ghetto in order to make them sound sexy rubs me the wrong way with a metal bristled brush.
Also, the fact that they appropriate AAVE.
No. NO.
I’m so glad that we finally have some Asian American artists getting recognition, because hey. It has been needed for a long ass time; there are many brilliant AA artists, but you never see them getting as much attention; FEM is really the only group I can think of that has gotten mainstream popularity. And good for them!
But the fact that they got big by benefiting from the very things that us non-Asian PoC get blasted for just chafes my ass, big time.
They appropriated from Black Hip hop Culture, Black culture, and other cultures, mainly in language, but probably in other ways too. And the fact that they did so when it’s far from their place to do so, and then capitalized on the very things that Black artists get stigmatized for doing? Uh uh.
Society will takes something one lone Black hip hop artists has done/said, and that artist will be viewed differently, as hardened, misogynist, evil, violent, whatever. And not only that, but sometimes, society will also take that one thing that artist said and apply it to every Black person in existence in order to create/a stereotype, and the effects range from micro-aggressions to getting killed. But FEM can say/do the same things, and they’re so so cool for it. They’re so trendy. So fun.
And that bothers the fuck out of me.
