“Is Macklemore the new face of hip hop?”

Ugh.

Listen.

I like Macklemore. He raps about serious topics at times, which isn’t anything new, but always has been something that I liked. More than that, he acknowledges his privilege, and the complications of race, the fact that he’s a white man in a Black genre, and the advantages he gets there because he’s white. It’s nice to see a white rapper acknowledging the roots of the music they’re using, and being a critical thinker. He appropriates AAVE, which will never not bug the hell out of me, but I do like that he acknowledges and discusses his privilege. To what extent, I have no idea. But. Sadly, it’s really fucking refreshing.

But is he the face of hip hop? Uhmmm. HELL NO. White folk have lost their minds. I am so tired of them seeing a white person doing what Black folk have been doing forever, and thinking they’re something special because “They’re rapping and they’re WHITE! How cute how quaint how different how unique how stunning!”

As much as I like Macklemore’s earlier stuff, he is not the new face of hip hop. Are you for real serious right now? :|

I knew that the author of that shit was a white person the minute they captioned a picture of Macklemore with his Black friends as “hanging with the homies.”

Also, I see you, Rolling Stones, saying some little white girl from what, Florida, is the new face of hip hop, and putting all the talented Black women artists on the SIDELINES of the damn page, including Azealia Banks. For real? I have words for you, Rolling stone.
