It’s an all African American cast. I love all of the actresses but I don’t understand why it’s an all black cast. Steel Magnolia’s is based on a true story, the women that the story is based on were all white. To change the race of the women seems a little odd to me. I think there were many things that they could have tweaked to update the story rather than changing the race of the characters. They could have changed the race of on or two characters but to change the whole cast seems weird to me. I don’t understand it. Maybe it’s just me though. I have nothing against the actresses that are playing in the new version, I love Queen Latifah, I met her when I was 6 and she was the nicest, sweetest, most wonderful person I have ever met. I will never forget meeting her. I remember everything from that day. Just wanted to add that so people don’t think I’m hating on the actresses, I am not.

Maybe they were casting not to change the race, but they were giving the parts to the best actresses? Idk, maybe you’re just being too sensitive about this, it’s only a show/movie. It’s not like it’s a huge deal that they cast Black women instead of white ones. Maybe they thought that the real life people were too pale and decided to make them look better for the screen. Idk, dark skin shows up better anyway; white skin just reflects all those stage lights and that would require a lot more editing—more color balancing and all that—and that would cost more money. Maybe they don’t have the budget to deal with editing white people’s skin, so they just chose darker women?

Wait, those only work when moviemakers cast white people in roles that are supposed to be people of color. My bad~ :D

But in all seriousness, I refuse to take this seriously. Because It’s not like they regularly cast white people to play people of color in things that are based on real life poc amirite? NEVER. HAPPENS. EVER. It’s not like white people get the majority of all available roles, whether they’re good actors or shitty ones, over PoC. It’s not like the majority of casting calls call for “white only.” But THIS is your complaint, that for ONCE, Black women are the cast rather than white women? Pfffbt girl, that is some privileged mess.
