Let me add something to that response: Even today, people of color wearing clothes from our cultures gets us killed. Hell, even if we AREN’T wearing things from our culture, if we aren’t speaking the ~dominant language~ in a public place, we face unwelcome stares at best, death threats at worst. Even when we aren’t doing THAT, we face the same things. White people come at us for simply existing and daring to do so in their line of sight; you really think us wearing stuff from our culture will be welcomed with open arms?

“But I’M white and *I* don’t—” Yeah, good for you. Doesn’t change the fact that the majority of this harassment comes from your god damn people. Doesn’t change the fact that the risk is still there. Doesn’t change the fact that while we get harassed for wearing out clothes, white people can wear our clothes—which, bee tee dubs, holds a lot of significance—and be praised for it. If anybody feels so compelled to cry that racism is a two way street, I’m gonna tell you to stuff it and bounce.

People of Color face all sorts of risks—risks that you as a white person don’t even have to think about, risks that are so removed from your lived experience that you think we’re making this shit up— just by walking out our god damn doors in the morning, and you want to get mad at us for wearing jeans, when we wear them because your folk perpetuate the threats we face if we don’t? Nah, bruh, get real.

I find the people who keep saying,”You’ve appropriated Native American culture!” and she “stuffed the entirety of it into one little constume,” (or something like that) ignorant WLB. You really think NA culture is limited to one faux-ten-dollar-outfit-she-may-have-gotten-from-Party-City ALL of the Native’s culture? Really?

How … racist.

Except that I AM Native, and I said SEVERAL fucking times that those costumes condense a wide diaspora of cultures into one. Cute of you to choose the one time I didn’t get ultra specific as if I didn’t talk about this point already. I know you’re thirsty for a victory right now but that well is dry for you here, my dear, so feel free to step~

First of all, calm the fuck down and stop acting as if people are attacking you.

Second of all, where the hell were you mentioned in my reblog? Nowhere?

It’s a fake-costume with no religious importance. Is it stereotypical? Yes. Is it insensitive? Depending on who you ask. (Meaning not all NA found that costume insensitive. There were a few in her asks saying they were flattered, even.) I don’t know why you’re playing the victim card like I said you have no right to be upset?

First of all, I am calm.

Secondly, you reblogged my post with that commentary. Were you just reblogging to make commentary irrelevant to what I said? Prolly not. But nice try.

Lastly, I’m responding specifically to you saying this: I find the people who keep saying,”You’ve appropriated Native American culture!” and she “stuffed the entirety of it into one little constume,” (or something like that) ignorant WLB. You really think NA culture is limited to one faux-ten-dollar-outfit-she-may-have-gotten-from-Party-City ALL of the Native’s culture? Really? Those are your words. That’s what you said. That’s what I replied to. Me saying that I’ve already mentioned that is me playing the victim? Wow, you’re just full of loaded terms aren’t you?

Just because some PoC aren’t offended by it doesn’t mean that it’s suddenly acceptable. Some folks are ok with white people using the N word, but that doesn’t make it okay.

“you are playing the victim card and you should be flattered”

What rubbish is this

Lol die in a fire

BASICALLY! I just… what is this giant work of fuckery that is being created? I CAN’T EVEN.

So many basic bitches lmao.

WHITE LOGIC is FUCKBAD. No one said that Native American culture has been reduced to your shitty walmart costumes and sloppy ass face paint, you insufferable twat. Did it hurt when you jumped to your own conclusion?

OMG THE BOLDED. LMFAOOOO OMG I LOVE YOU.

Also, can I add one thing? No, I don’t think NA culture is limited to one faux ten dollar outfit. Because that shit isn’t part of NA culture, PERIOD.

Having just read the thread for myself, I can see where you’re coming from. Personally, the costume doesn’t bother me. Then again, I’m no Native American and I dunno what most of them think about Halloween costumes.

The girl was uppity and didn’t react well to criticism. She should have at least listened respectfully rather than shutting you down with “Too bad,” even if she still intended to wear the costume regardless.

Now, at the same time, I feel like the backlash she’s getting is a little much. Not because the costume isn’t culturally insensitive, but because the general response seems disproportionate to the crime. Even operating under the assumption that dressing up like this is offensive, she’s clearly someone who’s completely unfamiliar with the way race relations are viewed on this website; this is evident in the way she expressed total surprise at being called racist, due to the fact that racism is defined as racially motivated hatred or bias. She obviously knows nothing about the whole cultural appropriation shitstorm that’s so prevalent here.

Here you have a girl who has ostensibly never been exposed to any in-depth discussions on institutionalized racism. In her world, there’s nothing to racism beyond looking down on other races. Therefore, upon being called a racist, she immediately becomes insulted and defensive that she would be compared to such horrible types of people. Not the best response, but still understandable.

Several people have reacted to her costume as if she’s an active bigot. I think she’s ignorant of the implications of her costume at worst and is resistant to being told there’s anything serious about it. Again, since I’m not Native American and don’t personally know any Native Americans, I can’t be absolutely sure, but I imagine that at least most of them would just roll their eyes, scoff “White people,” and go about their day. Her costume is tacky, but we’ve got people calling her all kinds of cunts and hos for not immediately understanding and—yes—being uppity.

Honestly, if we’re to assume that she’s a fundamentally horrible person because she’s done something that could potentially offend a marginalized group of people, I think it’s kind of hypocritical to throw misogynist slurs around.

This is a beautifully written and sensitive post. People were telling her to kill herself because she bought a Halloween costume that they didn’t like. That is social justice done wrong. This post is social justice done right.

I don’t condone death threats, nor did I give her any, so if that’s why you were all up on my ass, you can back away now. As for you, tinyblacktears, you’re right. You’re not Native. So it’s not very wise of you to try to dictate how Native people respond, amirite? And no, calling her a cunt isn’t a double standard. And ignorance isn’t an excuse. Intention isn’t magical; it doesn’t matter. She got more than enough of a heads up from other people as to why it was racist and her response was, “Too bad.” Because she doesn’t care. She has no idea what the implications of her donning that costume are, the long term effects of her, with hundreds, thousands of other non-Natives perpetuating damaging stereotypes that have a very real effect on Native Americans. Nor does she care. So why should any of us be assed to care about her feelings? She’s crying because she got yelled at? Too bad. Nobody said she’s fundamentally a horrible person, but she is being racist. Fact. If PoC are old enough to deal with racism at the age of two, then how come a sixteen year old—two years away from adulthood—still isn’t old enough to deal with the consequences of HER racism? Riddle me that.

Maybe as a compromise you could act a little rude but not to the extent of being a self-righteous, histrionic bitch about something ultimately trivial? That’s what makes societies function - fair compromise.

The really ironic thing about this is that their blog is called “Think before you speak” and it’s pretty clear that this person didn’t even put 30 seconds of thought into it before they wrote this incredibly racist and misogynist rant. Thanks for the hate speech, “Think before you speak”! You’re really ending Native American oppression and suffering! I’m sure all Native Americans everywhere will thank you for speaking over them and ruining their businesses selling Native American art, jewelry, and clothing to white people. Who needs food when you have Native Pride, right?

You want to help Native Americans? Do you REALLY want to help Native Americans? Then donate some money to this charity:

Frankly, Native Americans could really give a shit about some white girl’s Halloween costume when they’re more worried about freezing to death this winter and trying to cook their meagre fucking meals over a campfire outdoors in the snow. You don’t really care about Native Americans. You’re just using them because you want to be pissed off at people and chew them out so you can feel superior to people on the internet. Prove me wrong. Give money to the Stove Assistance program. When every Native American has a stove, then you can bitch about Halloween costumes without being a hypocrite.

Oh, let’s look at the tags, here. “hate speech. “Misogyny.” “Shut up and buy a stove.” AREN’T WHITE PEOPLE CA-YUTE? :D

Can you read? I’m half Native American! I AM NATIVE AMERICAN. OOPS. And if you think Natives don’t care about this shit, you haven’t been looking hard enough because there are PLENTY of Native folk who have spoken out about this shit on many many MANY occasions. But very cute, trying to dictate what a group you aren’t apart of would and wouldn’t be offended by.

“I have the dark skin and hair like native americans do, so that goes nicely with it.”

Who the everlasting fuck do you think you are?

I’m half Black, half Cherokee.

I’m Black in appearance. If I claim my Cherokee heritage, I get shamed for it. My ass is darker than hers by multitudes, and if I say I’m Cherokee, I get called self hating. Liar. HA!

But some white girl thinks that because she isn’t the shade as a sheet of fucking paper, she has ~the skin tone~. Because we’re all the same shade, don’t you know. We all look like white people with a tan. Native Americans are just white people with dark hair. Yep.

Just because your skin is ~dark~ (note: IT ISN’T, you little fucking shit) doesn’t mean you have ~the look~ and it certainly doesn’t mean you have the right.

You THINK you look like another ethnicity so that gives you a pass to insult that ethnicity by commodifying it as a racist costume.

And all those titty sucking assholes who came in after are gonna be all “BE NICE! ASK NICELY! WHY WOULD YOU YELL AT HER?! SHE’S CRYING!”

NOBODY GIVES A FUCK IF THE CUNT IS CRYING. LET HER CRY HARDER FOR ALL I CARE.

If PoC are old enough to experience racism from the point where we pop out of the vagina, then this bitch is old enough, at damn near adulthood, to deal with the consequences of her actions.

And she WAS asked nicely. And what did she say? What did her white ass say, thinking that there wouldn’t be repercussions because she can dress how she wants, regardless of how Natives feel about it? “Too bad.” TOO BAD

So people stop being nice, because being nice GETS US NOWHERE. And then WE get yelled at. Because being nice would’ve made her listen. CLEARLY. Did you dumb fucks not read the fucking thread and SEE for yourselves what happened when people asked nicely?

Fuck you. Fuck all of you dumb white cunt bitches, and fuck that little 16 year old hoe, old enough to be an asshole but not old enough to deal with the ensuing slap in the face. Fuck her. I hope that when she goes trick or treating somebody sugars and feathers her ass, since she wants to wear feathers so damn badly.

I mean jesus fuck, the first thing you learn is to ask first, and if the person says no, then you don’t take it, and you get the fuck over it and go on your merry fucking way.

If you ask me for some food off my plate and I say no, you aren’t just gonna reach over and take it anyway, why? Because that’s rude.

But it’s totally okay to take sacred pieces of already marginalized cultures without asking, and then act like they’re so mean for telling you that you can’t touch, right? RIGHT?

It’s like they lose their home training and god damn common sense when they hit a certain age.
